Sword of Truth is a great series!  Everyone should also check out the "Book of the New Sun" by Gene Wolfe, the first book is called Shadow & Claw, it's one of my favorites.

Also The Black Company series by Glen Cook is solid!

Most anything by Margaret Weis, specifically: Deathgate Cycle, Dragonlance, and Star of the Guardians

The books by Raymond E. Feist

Stephen R. Donaldson's Gap Series and The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, The Unbeliever

There are many more, but those are probably most of my favorites.

I liked Robert Jordan's Eye of the World book... the series started off great but kinda hit a wall and then Robert Jordan died...

George RR Martin is my favorite now

Oooh, lots of fantasy lovers I see!

I'd recommend The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch.  Great characters, interesting world and plot... probably one of my favourites!  The follow up (Red Seas Under Red Skies) is just as good.

Steven Erikson

"A tale of the Malazan book of the fallen" is the name of the Series

I'm on book 7 and there are 8 out atm. The best part is they just keep getting better.

Titles are as follows:

Gardens of the Moon
Deadhouse Gates
Memories of Ice
House of Chains
Midnight Tides
The Bonehunters
Reaper's Gale (currently reading)
Toll of the Hounds

My brother recommended this series to me and He has read most of the other ones mentioned in this thread.
If your a fan of fantasy you have to check this out.

Stupid Death Gate Cycle is out of print, been trying to get my hands on it.  So far I've only been able to grab book 1.

My suggestion to the thread is the Camulod Chronicles by Jack Whyte.  It is an interesting series, 8 books I believe, that is a complete retelling of the Arthur legend.  This is a "historical" take rather than mystical series.  I've never much cared for this time period or cast of characters, but this series made me care.  The story starts a couple generations before Arthur and ends after the fall of Camelot, but it doesn't rush to get there.  You'll spend a couple books enjoying Britain around the time of the withdrawal of the Roman forces, a couple with Uther and Merlyn, and a couple with Arthur and Lance.  Check it out, you won't be disappointed.

*tries to bring necro-thread back to life*

I read pretty much everything I can get my hands on (although not much of a fantasy person, outside of Tolkien), but here are several favorites off the top of my head:

The Lords of Discipline - Pat Conroy (one of my absolute favorite authors, though not thrilled with his last - interesting ESPN article about him here)
I Know This Much Is True - Wally Lamb (don't let the Oprah Book Club tag scare you off)
The World According to Garp - John Irving
The Stand - Stephen King
Angela's Ashes - Frank McCourt
Of Mice and Men - John Steinbeck
The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy - Douglas Adams
The Bourne Triliogy - Robert Ludlum (second is my favorite, but not sure if you've seen the movies, they're as good - so much suspense that is likely lost if you know what to expect... I read the books the first time while Matt Damon and I were both still in grade school  :P)
The Hunt for Red October - Tom Clancy
A Civil Action - Jonathan Harr (awful, awful film made from this - the book is amazing)

I just grabbed the new Stephen King (Under the Dome) on Kindle.. enjoy his saga-style books, so am hoping it's a good read.  Have some Amazon gift certificates to burn post-Xmas, so looking for some suggestions =)

I just finished...

"The Road" by Cormac McCarthy.
I wasn't as impressed as a lot of others have been.  Aside from the sci-fi "we screw ourselves in the future" topic a la 1984 or Brave New World, post-apocalyptic novels are some of my favourites.  This one just didn't do it for me.  It won a lot of awards and stuff though, so I'm probably in the minority.

"The Lovely Bones" by Alice Sebold.
One of those bestsellers that is tough to put down and you can kinda feel was intended to be made into a film.  It's pretty grim at the start, but then takes on a very creative spin on a hard subject.  I recommend it.

BTW, we should also have a movie thread imo.  "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus" is fucking amazing.  If you like Terry Gilliam films even a little bit, you should go see it.

I didn't like 'The Road' much either - but 'No Country for Old Men' is awesome and I liked 'The Crossing' too.

I remember really enjoying 'Lovely Bones'.. read it when it came out, but don't really remember it, will have to dig it out of a box it must be hiding in and reread it before seeing the movie.
