AVATAR movie...
« on: December 19, 2009, 03:18:39 AM »
Well, I went to see that movie tonight.  I wasn't expecting much.  I watched the preview before I went and I had heard that it cost like 500million to make earlier this week.  I don't go out often and my best friend had chosen that movie.  Well, it ranks on my top 3 lifetime easily...  It was completely amazing.  The attention to detail, storyline, the language... everything was sublime.  The 3d somewhat sucked but it was such a great movie that you forget it quickly.

You get completely immersed in this Pandora world they created and totally believe it really exists.  It's funny because it reminded me of starcraft and warcraft all at the same time.. World tree, Draenies, human starcraft marines, floating rock islands (nagrand) etc etc...

Anyways, I give it 11/10 and I think that everybody will like it.  Don't hesitate to go with your loved one they will all appreciate it.  There is something for everyone in that movie, quite literally.

i saw it with virtually no knowledge of what to expect.

the eye candy in the film is absolutely splendid.  the graphics are really something to behold, and i wish i had seen it in a typical US cinema with better visual quality and sound.

the nature of the story is just another sci fi film imo.  some of my favourite sci fi films play on the same themes but avatar never really pushes the envelope in terms of how the characters and story unfold.

it's worth going to see, and i'll be interested to rent it on video to pick apart some of the scenes in slow-mo, but for me, the excellence of the film did not extend beyond the visual elements.

I think that the story was really nice and never seemed long.  It's a 2:46 long film and I find that we got as much as we could in that time storywise.  You learn a lot about their ancestors, connection to nature, relations to each other, rythes of passages, etc etc...  I don't think we could really have gotten much more within the time period allotted.  But quite frankly, it could've lasted 5 hours long.

james cameron movie with sygorney weaver or however you spell her name from the alien movies. I saw an interview with her about a new taping technique where they acted out the scenes in special technical gear that projected themselves into the environment so they could actually interract with their virtual surroundings.  anyway...I need something to keep me busy, I'll have to go see it this weekend or maybe around xmas.

Think this one is called "The Last Airbender" and I saw the preview for it and cracked up...that kid playing him looks funny as hell.

......District 9 was better..... >.>
I thought it was an excellent movie. The big sky battle was breathtaking.
I only have one slight issue with the movie, and it's a spoiler, so avoid the red text if you haven't seen the movie yet.
*SPOILER*

So I saw this today and I agree with Nugget.  Visually it's amazing.  The story, however, is pretty derivative.  It's Dancing with Wolves.  It's The Last Samurai.  If I thought about it for a bit I could probably come up with a dozen movies with the exact same plot.  It's good and it shows just how far CGI gas come, but I don't think I would call it great.  Then again I am a jaded movie goer, so your mileage may vary.

I went to see it yesterday.

And it was a pretty bad idea: tuesdays are half price at that theater, + vacations for everyone = tickets apparently sold out 2h+ before both the last representations. Oh and it's also the only theater in a pretty huge radius that presents movies in their original version... >_<

So... apparently Frenchies have it tough for movie-going :P

Satrion: usually I'm the same way with movies.  I'm very hard to please, and usually emphasize plot above all else.  In fact, I can't quite put my finger on why I didn't roll my eyes throughout this entire movie.  Granted, there were some hilariously cheesy moments, and the plot essentially writes itself, but I was still quite entertained.  Maybe because Sci Fi/Fantasy blockbusters are relatively rare, so I cherish them when I find them?  Who knows.

I do know the director didn't intend it as a critic pleaser, or anything other than a pander towards your "average moviegoer".  So at least it's not pretending to be something it's not.

Maybe because a badass evil dude got in a mech and used a GIANT ROBOT KNIFE.

This is true.  The fact mechs are equipped with knives THAT THEY HAVE TO PICK UP, not deploy out of their fists or anything that makes sense.  Badass.
