So I saw this today and I agree with Nugget. Visually it's amazing. The story, however, is pretty derivative. It's Dancing with Wolves. It's The Last Samurai. If I thought about it for a bit I could probably come up with a dozen movies with the exact same plot. It's good and it shows just how far CGI gas come, but I don't think I would call it great. Then again I am a jaded movie goer, so your mileage may vary.
This is exactly what bothered me about it...and not only is it a rehashed plot, it's a blatantly political plot. There's an evil corporation/government entity that's clearly western (American?) invading a tribal jungle type place (Africa) to steal their resources and ruin the world, no matter the cost in life. The underlying message that people get out of this without realizing it? Corporations are evil and are intent on destroying the world just to make money.
I wouldn't even have minded so much if they didn't make it so one dimensional and cliche. I'm really getting tired of Hollywood politicizing everything. It rebukes the very establishments that make entertainment like this possible.
Aside from the plot and screenplay, the effects were awesome. I couldn't enjoy them at all, though.
